'night, Mother Marsha Norman MCC's Barn Theater Admission $5 at the door Directed by Emerson “Ric” Davenport Performances May 30 & 31 at 8:00 PM and June 1 at 2:00 PM |

Bottom’s Dream will start things off with a revival of the moving drama, ’night, Mother, by Marsha Norman. Three performances at Montcalm Community College’s Barn Theater will be in early March, dates to be announced. Emerson “Ric” Davenport directs.
The story involves a daughter, Jessie, and her mother, Thelma (referred to as "Mama" in the play). The play opens with Jessie calmly telling Mama that by morning she'll be dead, as she plans to commit suicide that very evening (she makes this revelation all while nonchalantly organizing household items and preparing to do her mother's nails). The subsequent dialogue between Jessie and Mama slowly reveals her reasons for her decision and her life with Mama and how thoroughly she has planned her own death, culminating in a disturbing yet unavoidable climax. ‘night, Mother was awarded the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It’s a tension-filled play for audiences, who are thrust deep into the heart of a powerful question: Will Jessie really kill herself, or can Mama find a way to stop her? Compelling, to say the least. |

Fools Neil Simon MCC's Barn Theater Admission $5 at the door Directed by Hilda Sorvari Performances: September 26, 27 and 28 |
|
|
Early fall will see the BDT production of “Fools” by Neil Simon. Performances at MCC’s Barn Theater are scheduled for September 26, 27 and 28. Hilda Sorvari will direct.
The story is a combination of fable, romantic comedy, and farce. Leon Tolchinsky has landed a terrific teaching job in an idyllic Russian hamlet. When he arrives, he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. Leon meets many of the inhabitants, such as "Something Something Snetsky" and Yenchna the vendor, who tries to sell flowers she claims are fish. You see, the town has been cursed with chronic stupidity for 200 years. Count Gregor, a name that makes the people of Kulyenchikov tremble in fear, cast this horrible spell. It’s Leon’s job to break the curse, but no one tells him that if he stays over 24 hours and fails, he too becomes stupid. Fools is vintage Simon, old vaudeville shtick full of one-liners and goofy charm. Here’s a couple of samples: Butcher: “Do I have any mail?” Postman: “No, I'm the postman, I have all the mail.” Doctor: “You're going to live to be 80.” Magistrate: “I'm 79.” Doctor: “You're going to have a wonderful year.” |
