A Christmas Story

Auditions are coming up in August for the Flat River Community Players’ production of “A Christmas Story,” humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the 1940s.

Based on the well-known, classic movie, the story follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, at Goldblatt's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out."

All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more.

Steve King is set to direct “A Christmas Story” for the Players. He will need 2 women and 2 men, all of varying ages, as well as 2 girls and 5 boys all of elementary or middle school ages to make up the cast.

Auditions will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday through Wednesday, August 11 through 13, at the First Congregational Church in Greenville. Performances are set for November 28-30 and December 5-6.

If you have any questions about auditioning for “A Christmas Story,” or you’d like to volunteer for a behind-the-scenes role with the show, contact the Players at 616-754-8207 or email the show producer, Lila King, at lilaking@charter.net.
